- Volvo will end production of the electric EX40 and replace it with a larger EX50 that will ride on the new SPA3 platform, according to Automotive News.
- The EX50 will be a larger and less expensive SUV compared to its EX40 predecessor, but will remain smaller than the EX60, which sits in the same compact electric SUV segment.
- The EX50 is expected to go on sale in late 2027 and start in the high $40,000 range.
Volvo is reportedly phasing out its electric EX40 for a longer, taller, and less expensive compact SUV, aptly named the EX50, for the 2027 model year. Though the Ex50 isn't officially confirmed yet, sources with knowledge of the plan told Automotive News that the new EX50 will cost significantly less than the current EX40 while offering more space. It will also effectively serve as a replacement for the EX30, which was dropped from Volvo's U.S. lineup after 2026, as the brand's entry-level EV.
The 2027 Volvo EX60.
The EX50 will ride on the same SPA3 platform that was introduced with the EX60, which offers either a single rear-mounted electric motor making 369 horsepower or an all-wheel drive dual electric motor setup capable of up to 670 horsepower. The EX40 offers a similar single- or dual-motor setup on an older platform, so we expect roughly the same options with the EX50.
The new platform, SPA3, was built specifically to lower costs and improve scalability across Volvo's electric lineup, allowing for the same basic structure to fit different vehicles and electric powertrains. There are reports of other Volvos coming to the United States with this platform, including a wagon and sedan that could enter the U.S. market in 2028.
As the slightly bigger replacement for the EX40, the EX50 is poised to be similar in size to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E, according to the AN report. In the luxury segment, it'll closely compete against the likes of Cadillac Optiq, which starts at $52,695, and the $51,995 Audi Q4 e-tron.
2025 Volvo EX40
We reached out to Volvo for a statement, but a company representative declined to comment on or confirm any future product plans. The AN report says this will be the first vehicle to be built in Volvo's new plant in Kosice, Slovakia. The report also says Volvo expects to sell up to 10,000 units to the United States in its first year, after production is set to start in fall 2027. Priced in the high $40,000 range, it'll slot in as the least expensive electric option in Volvo's current U.S. lineup.
