Polestar shocked the automotive world when it revealed the Polestar 4 in 2023, with the fastback SUV ditching a rear window and forcing drivers to rely on their mirrors. Perhaps that decision made the sleek EV too niche, because Polestar has now revealed the 4 SUV, which, despite the name, essentially appears to be an electric wagon thanks to its elongated roofline. Sadly, the Polestar 4 SUV will remain forbidden fruit, following Polestar’s ban from the United States over Chinese technology.
Up front, the Polestar 4 SUV looks essentially identical to its more unorthodox “coupe” sibling, with pointy headlights and a trapezoidal grille opening in the bumper. But the extended roof transforms the silhouette, giving the 4 SUV a more traditional look and planted stance. At the rear, the full-width taillight remains, but above it sits an actual glass rear window. What an innovative concept. The 4 SUV comes standard with a normal rearview mirror, but buyers can still upgrade to a digital mirror.

Polestar says the boxier shape brings an extra inch or so of rear headroom. But the biggest upgrade is in rear cargo space, which rises to around 23 cubic feet with the rear seats in place, up from around 19 cubic feet in the coupe. With the rear seats folded, the SUV variant has 59 cubic feet of room, versus the coupe’s 54 cubes.
There are also roof rails that can handle a dynamic load of up to 220 pounds, and the redesigned roof also means larger panoramic glass that stretches all the way to the tailgate. The 4 SUV also offers an electrochromic glass roof not available on the coupe, which can transition between fully transparent, fully tinted, or selectively shaded sections at the touch of a button.
The Polestar 4 SUV also introduces two new exterior paint colors, a bright silver green called Aurora and a bright silver purple called Ozone. Unfortunately, all of the photos published by Polestar show the car in boring white paint.
The interior design is also basically the same as the coupe, with a large touchscreen and a clean, minimalist design. Polestar continues its obsession with sustainable materials, using a synthetic fabric made from recycled plastic, although buyers can also spec Bridge of Weir nappa leather that’s described as “a chrome-free by-product of the food industry that meets strict animal welfare standards and is fully traceable to its origin.”

Underneath the new bodywork are the same powertrain options, with a 268-hp single-motor rear-wheel-drive version and a 536-hp dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant. A 94.0-kWh battery provides up to 391 miles of range in the rear-drive model and 372 miles with all-wheel drive, although those figures are based on Europe’s optimistic WLTP test cycle.
The other big change for the SUV is a new Camping mode, which provides access to the climate controls, entertainment, and ambient lighting while the vehicle is parked. It also allows you to use the vehicle-to-load function, which can power external electric accessories using the car’s battery.
The Polestar 4 SUV will be built in Busan, South Korea, and it will go on sale in the fourth quarter of this year. Unfortunately, none of those sales will be in the U.S., with Polestar departing our market after the 2026 model year due to the Connect-Car Rule passed by the U.S. government.
