Fernando Alonso will race on in Formula 1 with Aston Martin into the 2027 season after extending his contract with the team.

The 45-year-old will continue to race alongside team-mate Lance Stroll, whose own extended deal has also been confirmed.

Alonso, the two-time world champion from 2005-2006, will prolong his career into a record-extending 24th campaign since first racing in the sport as a 19-year-old in 2001. He has raced in 440 grands prix, winning 32, and turns 46 next July.

Aston Martin have endured a torrid first year under F1's new technical regulations in 2026, their first as Honda's works engine partners and with an Adrian Newey-led car design, scoring just three points in 15 races so far.

But the veteran Alonso, who has also been heavily critical of the sport's current engine rules, says he wants to continue on as he feels both fast enough and is "committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed".

"I'm very happy to sign a new contract with the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team," said Alonso, who joined them from Alpine in 2023.

Aston Martin focus on car performance with drivers unchanged

Canada's Stroll will stay alongside Alonso for a fifth season - and a ninth year at the Silverstone-based outfit overall - at the team his father Lawrence is executive chairman at and co-owns.

"I'm very happy to continue with Aston Martin Aramco for the long term," said Stroll, 27.

"I've been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team.

What's left open in the driver market for 2027?

An extended stay for Alonso at Aston Martin for at least an additional year had looked likely since some of the grid's other potentially-available race-winning drivers, such as Williams' Carlos Sainz, recommitted to their existing teams over the summer break.

Aston Martin's confirmation of an unchanged line-up leaves just four seats left unfilled on next year's hitherto-static grid - at Racing Bulls and Haas.

Racing Bulls are yet to confirm either of their drivers although it appears Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad are favourite to stay on.

Haas look certain to retain Oliver Bearman but Esteban Ocon's future appears likely to lie elsewhere, with F2 title leader Rafael Camara, who is backed by Ferrari, considered the front-running alternative to the experienced Frenchman.
