When the company introduced the model, it also announced that on Instagram, anybody could tag a public account — including yours, if it is public — and automatically generate AI deepfakes based on its posts. The tagger and Muse Image didn't even have to ask for your permission. Meta wrote in its launch post that you could @-mention people to use the feature if "you want to design a custom event invitation, mock up a collaborative creative concept or generate a personalized graphic."

U.S. federal cybersecurity agency CISA said it did not have a prepared response plan for how it should handle a cybersecurity incident in May, after an investigative reporter notified the agency that a contractor had publicly exposed sensitive keys and credentials for accessing U.S. government systems.

CISA, the Homeland Security unit tasked with defending federal networks and helping to safeguard critical infrastructure, revealed Friday in a postmortem report that its staff “had to spend time building [a playbook] during the early stages of the incident.” The agency said it is important to prepare playbooks for “all anticipated needs” to ensure that organizations are ready to respond in the event of a security incident rather than scrambling to improvise one in real time.

Ptolemy in the second century A.D. and al-Sufi in A.D. 964 both recorded Theta Eridani as one of the 13 brightest stars in the sky. Hipparchus may have said the same. But there's a problem. In a federal lawsuit filed on Friday, Apple sued the artificial intelligence (AI) company, two of its employees, as well as io Products, claiming it has engaged in "a pattern of theft" of Apple's confidential product development and related work.

Ariana Grande will no longer appear in American Horror Story season 13 due to conflicting schedules with her Eternal Sunshine tour, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

As previously announced in a Halloween social media post from Ryan Murphy Productions, Grande was set to join a slew of American Horror Story veterans, including Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman and Jessica Lange. The cast has been filming in New York City this week, reprising their Coven characters from season three.

Researchers have demonstrated for the first time that the microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii alters the activity of about one-third of its protein-coding genes in response even to moderate temperature changes. The study, published in the journal The Plant Cell, points to far-reaching consequences of climate change for aquatic ecosystems and soil. The research team is from the Cluster of Excellence Balance of the Microverse at Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology—Hans Knöll Institute (Leibniz-HKI).

The Top Boy actor Micheal Ward has been cleared of raping and sexually assaulting a woman who claimed he had attacked her in the back of a car.

Research from Aston University has shown that the public has no clearly accepted definition for the term "social media" or agreement about which websites and platforms are classified as such.

Psychological research into social media tends to focus on its potential impact on mental health and well-being. Ph.D. researcher Evelyn Murray, Dr. Charlotte Pennington (primary supervisor), Dr. Daniel Shaw and Professor Michael Larkin from Aston University's Department of Psychology wanted to understand which platforms the public considers social media, its views on common negative and positive characteristics of social media, and how much people agreed with common definitions. They recruited nearly 1,000 participants who were active on social media to determine their views.

In a roundtable chat with members of the press, one reporter asked Wright how and when he knew that he wanted to be an actor after graduating with a degree in political science, noting that the two fields appeared to be quite different. “So, you think politics and theater are completely different things,” Wright responded. “I’m not so sure. I think our politics has gotten increasingly like show business – to the detriment of everyone who’s involved.”

Department M has closed a transaction to acquire a significant stake in Neon, the Oscar-winning indie studio behind “Parasite” and “Anora.” Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Tom Quinn, the founder of Neon and an indie vet who has had stints at Radius and Magnolia, will remain CEO of the company. Michael Schaefer, a partner in Department M, will become Neon’s chief content officer, while Mike Larocca, another partner in Department M, won’t move over to Neon but will join its board.

In a global first, two humanoid robots have performed surgery on a live patient. The robots performed laparoscopic cholecystectomies, or gallbladder removals: retracting tissue, dissecting, clipping and lifting the gallbladder out of the liver bed. The two big caveats: the patient was a pig and the robots were fully teleoperated by trained human surgeons. Another caveat: as you can see in the image above, the robots were tethered so they could not accidentally fall and injure their porcine patient.

Roughly 50,000 years ago, a kangaroo unlike any alive today lived in the mountain rainforests of New Guinea.

First discovered by Western science in 1983, Protemnodon tumbuna was roughly the size of a modern red kangaroo but much more stocky and muscular. Most peculiarly, it hopped little, if at all. It moved mostly on all fours, with long, strong forelimbs providing support for agile bounding through complex and steep terrain.
